The bank was nationalized in 1974 under the Banks Nationalization Act during the government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. In April 1991, MCB made history as the first Pakistani bank to be privatized, when the National Group led by Nishat Group acquired a 26% stake. The privatization was completed over subsequent years, with the Nishat Group eventually consolidating its majority ownership. In 2005, the bank formally shortened its name from Muslim Commercial Bank Limited to MCB Bank Limited. In 2008, Malaysian bank Maybank acquired an 18.78% strategic stake, strengthening MCB’s international profile. In 2006, MCB became the first Pakistani bank to list its Global Depositary Receipts on the London Stock Exchange.
