The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, the bank that gave HSBC its name and acronym, was established on March 3, 1865, in Hong Kong by Thomas Sutherland, a Scottish businessman who worked for a shipping firm and recognized the need for a locally based bank to finance the growing flow of commerce between Asia, Europe, and North America. With initial capital of HKD 5 million contributed by Hong Kong merchants, the bank opened on 3 March 1865 at 1 Queen’s Road, Central, and opened its Shanghai branch a month later.

History of HSBC

HSBC expanded quickly through the 19th century, opening branches in Yokohama in 1866, Kolkata in 1867, Manila in 1875, and New York in 1880. By 1875, the bank operated in seven countries across Asia, Europe, and North America. In 1965, HSBC took a controlling interest in Hang Seng Bank. In 1980, HSBC purchased a majority stake in Marine Midland Banks in the United States. The modern HSBC Holdings plc was established in London in March 1991 as the holding company for the entire group, and in 1992 it acquired Midland Bank in the UK, creating one of the world’s largest financial services organizations. HSBC’s global headquarters moved to London, where it remains today at 8 Canada Square. By 2025, HSBC served approximately 39 million customers across 58 countries.
