The Bank of Tokyo Logo represents a storied chapter in Japan’s financial history, associated with a bank that served for decades as Japan’s primary institution for international trade and foreign exchange. Today, the Bank of Tokyo’s legacy lives on within MUFG Bank, the core banking subsidiary of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, the largest financial institution in Japan and one of the largest in the world.
About Bank of Tokyo Logo
The Bank of Tokyo, Limited (BOT) was established in 1946 as the successor to the Yokohama Specie Bank, a state-chartered foreign exchange institution that had been Japan’s primary international banking arm since 1880. The Yokohama Specie Bank was founded by a former samurai following the end of the Shogunate era and quickly built an international network. After World War II, the bank was reorganized as The Bank of Tokyo and initially operated as an ordinary bank using the assets of its predecessor. In 1954, it was registered as a specialized foreign exchange bank, and thereafter focused exclusively on foreign trade and international finance.
History of Bank of Tokyo
The Bank of Tokyo built a global correspondent network that made it Japan’s premier trade finance bank during the postwar economic boom. In 1996, The Bank of Tokyo merged with Mitsubishi Bank, a major commercial bank founded in 1880 and affiliated with the Mitsubishi conglomerate, to form the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi. This merged entity subsequently joined with UFJ Bank in 2006 to form The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ (BTMU), one of the world’s largest banks by assets. In July 2018, BTMU was rebranded as MUFG Bank, Ltd., as part of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group’s global brand consolidation.
