The HBL Logo is one of the most recognized symbols in Pakistan’s financial landscape, representing the country’s oldest and largest private sector bank. With a history stretching back to 1941, HBL has been present through Pakistan’s founding, its growth, and every major chapter of its economic development.

About HBL Logo

HBL was founded on August 25, 1941, in Bombay, British India, by Muhammad Ali Habib and his brothers from the House of Habib, a prominent business family with a long history in South Asian commerce. The bank was established at the personal request of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, who recognized the need for a financial institution that could safeguard the wealth of the Muslim community and support the vision of an independent nation. HBL commenced operations with a fixed capital of just 25,000 rupees.

History of HBL

After Pakistan’s independence in August 1947, HBL moved its headquarters to Karachi, becoming the first commercial bank to establish operations in the newly formed nation. The bank played a vital role in building Pakistan’s foundational banking infrastructure during its earliest years. In 1951, HBL opened its first international branch in Colombo, Sri Lanka, beginning an international expansion that would eventually extend to over 15 countries. In 1974, HBL was nationalized under the Banks Nationalization Act along with other major private banks. Three decades later, in February 2004, the government privatized HBL by handing management control to the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) for approximately PKR 22.4 billion. In April 2015, the government divested its remaining 41.5% stake, making HBL a fully private institution.
