The Mashreq Bank Logo identifies the oldest privately owned bank in the United Arab Emirates, an institution that has driven financial innovation in the Gulf region for nearly six decades. Founded in 1967 by the Al Ghurair family before the UAE itself was formed, Mashreq has grown from a trade-focused merchant bank into one of the Middle East’s most advanced digital banking institutions.
About Mashreq Logo
Mashreqbank PSC was founded on January 1, 1967, in Dubai as the Bank of Oman, by the Al Ghurair family, led by the late Sheikh Saif Ahmed Al Ghurair. The founding capitalization came from the family’s deep merchant trading roots and a desire to provide modern banking facilities to Dubai’s rapidly growing trade and construction economy. At the time, Dubai had very limited formal banking infrastructure, and the Bank of Oman immediately positioned itself as a bridge between local traders and international finance.
History of Mashreq Bank
The bank was renamed Mashreq in 1993 — the Arabic word for “east” — reflecting its pan-regional ambition and growing international presence. Over the decades since its founding, Mashreq pioneered several firsts in UAE banking, including introducing the country’s first ATM and credit card. The bank has been recognized by Euromoney as the Most Innovative Bank in the Middle East. Under CEO Ahmed Abdelaal, Mashreq has invested heavily in digital transformation, launching the Mashreq Neo digital banking platform that enables fully remote onboarding and mobile-first financial services. By 2024, the bank reported total assets of AED 267.45 billion and a net income of AED 9.02 billion.
