The OPay Logo represents a global fintech unicorn that has carried its model of digital financial inclusion from the streets of Lagos to the markets of Karachi. Known for providing convenient, low-cost digital payment services to unbanked and underbanked populations in emerging markets, OPay’s entry into Pakistan marked a significant step in the country’s fintech evolution.
About OPay Logo
OPay was founded in August 2018 by Yahui Zhou, the chairman and CEO of Opera Limited, a Norwegian technology company. Zhou identified a clear gap in Nigeria’s financial ecosystem, where mobile phone penetration was high but access to formal banking remained limited for a large portion of the population. OPay launched with a zero-fee mobile wallet model that rapidly disrupted the market and attracted major investment from Chinese technology and venture capital firms.
History of OPay
OPay’s early growth was explosive. After a $50 million Series A in 2019, the company raised $120 million in a Series B later that year and followed with a landmark $400 million Series C in 2021 led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, valuing OPay at $2 billion. By 2022, the company had pivoted fully to financial services and began expanding beyond Nigeria into Egypt and Pakistan. OPay Pakistan was registered in 2021, with Ali Mubashar Kazmi serving as its Founder and President. The Pakistan operations are headquartered in Lahore. In a strategic move to accelerate its growth, OPay acquired Finja, a Pakistani fintech holding an Electronic Money Institution licence from the State Bank of Pakistan, providing OPay with a regulatory foundation to offer wallet and card issuance services in the country.
