About Samba Bank Logo

Samba Bank Limited in Pakistan was established through the acquisition of Crescent Commercial Bank Limited (CCBL) in March 2007, when Samba Financial Group of Saudi Arabia acquired a 68% stake in CCBL. Crescent Commercial Bank itself was formerly known as Mashreq Bank Pakistan Limited, which had resulted from the merger of Crescent Investment Bank Limited and the Pakistan branches of Mashreq Bank in 2003. Following the 2007 acquisition, the bank was renamed Samba Bank Pakistan.

History of Samba Bank

The ultimate parent, Samba Financial Group, was established in Saudi Arabia on February 12, 1980, under a Royal Decree that required foreign banks to be majority-owned by Saudi nationals. Citibank’s branches in Jeddah and Riyadh were transferred to the newly created Saudi American Bank, in which Citibank retained a 40% share. Over subsequent decades the bank grew into one of the largest financial institutions in the Middle East, eventually changing its name to Samba Financial Group in 2003. In 2022, Samba merged with the National Commercial Bank to form Saudi National Bank (SNB), which subsequently became the majority shareholder of Samba Bank Pakistan. In a further corporate development, United Bank Limited (UBL) acquired 84.51% of Samba Bank Pakistan from Saudi National Bank in 2022, making Samba Bank a wholly-owned subsidiary of UBL.
