United Bank Limited was founded by Agha Hasan Abedi and incorporated on November 7, 1958. The bank’s first branch was inaugurated on November 7, 1959, at I.I. Chundrigar Road in Karachi, which remains one of Pakistan’s most iconic financial addresses. Abedi founded UBL with a vision of unparalleled progress and financial excellence, and the bank quickly became known for setting industry firsts.

History of UBL

In 1963, UBL became the first Pakistani bank to open an international branch, on William Street in London. By 1967, UBL had introduced computer banking to Pakistan, becoming the country’s first bank to computerize its operations. That same year, it introduced UNICARD, Pakistan’s first-ever credit card. The bank was nationalized in 1974 under the Banks Nationalization Act. After decades under state ownership, UBL was privatized in 2002, with a consortium comprising the Abu Dhabi Group and the UK-based Bestway Group acquiring a controlling stake. Since then, Bestway Group has consolidated its ownership to 62.13%, making UBL a subsidiary of one of the UK’s largest family-owned businesses, founded by Sir Anwar Pervez OBE HPk.
